what to expect when booking a portrait session //

October 14, 2018

So you've thought about portraits for a little bit, maybe you want a studio session or maybe you just got engaged and you're wanting a couples portrait session! No matter what the reason I'll help show you what to expect from start to finish!

I. secure the photographer and date:

After you find the photographer you'll want to lock in the style of session that you're wanting, make sure the photographer you've chosen shows the style that you like! Usually booking is fairly straight forward, most photographers (including me) take a deposit to secure the date.

II. lock your style down:

One thing I always tell my clients is to book me if you love my style, I love to branch out and try new things but you can get a pretty good idea of what to expect by checking out my portfolio! Let me know what you're wanting, modern? woodsy? studio? artistic? Its YOUR shoot so I love to have your input on what you're feeling! Some shoots need a consult to get every detail ironed out, if you're wanting a super specific look we can nail that down! Pinterest is a great way for you to show me what you're wanting! I'll definitely give you my input and we can find a spot for your shoot that matches what you're wanting.

III, show up prepared:

Most of the time I book shoots depending on the lighting, so timing is super important! Showing up dressed and ready to go (or planning for extra time for makeup or outfit changes) is critical and makes the session go much smoother!

IV: during the shoot:

While I do work with models occasionally, the majority of my clients aren't professional models! I know jumping in front of the camera can feel awkward or you may not even book a session because you're worried the pictures won't turn out well. I do my best to make everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera, and once we get going you'll see those nerves fly away :) So if you're worried about you or a significant other looking awkward in front of the camera, don't! I'll show you how to pose, fix your hair, facial expressions, etc. if I see something that needs to be fixed! Usually my portrait shoots last around an hour, and that gives us plenty of time to get to know each other!

V: the gallery:

My turnaround time for sessions is around a week to three weeks with portrait sessions, I try to get them to you as soon as possible! You'll receive an email saying that your digital gallery is ready and BOOM you'll see all of those awesome pictures that we took! I don't charge for downloading the gallery, so that way you know all of the cost is up-front! I do offer albums and artisan prints, so feel free to check those out and order some as well!

There you have it! Portrait sessions really aren't difficult, they're supposed to be fun and simple! I hope this gives you guys an idea of what to expect! Not everything needs a Pinterest idea board and rigorous outfit planning, but planning ahead does make it easier to capture exactly what you're wanting. What questions do you guys have about booking or what to expect?

Cheers!
